General Statement of Duties

Performs routine custodial and maintenance tasks to ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of county buildings.


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Clean and maintain buildings, including vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting furniture, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Wash windows, blinds, window sills, and baseboards.
  • Stock restrooms with soap, paper towels, and tissue.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Perform grounds maintenance (sweeping sidewalks, parking lots, porches, and hauling trash).
  • Set up rooms for meetings and move furniture.
  • Defrost refrigerators, clean coffee pots, and wash trash containers and dishes.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment (e.g., carpet cleaners, buffers, vacuum machines).
  • Raise and lower flags as required.
  • Maintain janitorial supply inventory and keep records of work activities.
  • Operate and clean county vehicles.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May supervise community service workers.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of custodial cleaning methods and techniques.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions related to custodial and maintenance work.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact courteously with county employees and citizens.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic record-keeping skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must have visual acuity to operate cleaning equipment and small trucks safely.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Ability to read and write.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities.

Special Requirements

  • May require a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
