Duties:  Public Health Nurse in this position will work in all aspects of Adult Health.  This PHN also functions in the expanded nursing role with duties relating to managing the surveillance, investigation, and reporting necessary to control communicable disease in this county.  The nurse should have successfully completed the Basic TB course, Adult Physical Assessment course as well as the STD Nurse Clinician Course.  Adult Health consists of but is not limited to the following programs:  Health Promotion, Breast and Cervical Cancer Control, TB, Communicable Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes (DVP), STD, AIDS, and Cancer Detection.  Some of the duties of this position include ensuring all common Sexually Transmitted Diseases are screened, actively investigated, treated and followed.  Serve as a resource person for STD/HIV/AIDS related issues.  Provides direct care to patient requesting services including examination, screening and treatment under the policies/procedures.  Order and maintain appropriate medications as needed for all adult health clinics. Assist with Health Promotion Program. Administer injections of Hepatitis B, B-12 and allergy shots Administer TB skin test and assesses them.  Complete Epidemiology forms, perform venipunctures for SMAC’s, prepare sputum cans for AFB and instruct client on collection.   Directly observe medication therapy.  Review prophylactic medication with clients and provide HIV assessment, counseling and testing.  Nurse will be required to complete the Adult Physical Assessment Course as well as the STD Nurse Clinician Course.   

Minimum Education and Experience:  (PHN III) - Completion of approximately three months of training that includes both a didactic and on-the-job supervision phase in the expanded role specialty to which assigned AND graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and three years of professional nursing experience including two years of Public Health nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience [Note: three months training can be obtained concurrently with other experience required for position ].

Consider Work Against:  PHN I - Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation, or Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
