Salary Range: $30,328.00 - $43,328.00


  • General Statement of Duties:
    • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds, playing fields, parks, playgrounds, and related County recreational properties.
  • Distinguishing Features of the Class:
    • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks involving manual labor.
    • May work independently or as part of a crew.
    • Operates push and tractor mowers, hand tools, and light equipment.
    • Performs general housekeeping and building cleaning.
    • Responsible for semi-skill construction work and routine horticultural tasks.
    • Prepares playing fields for various sports.
    • Works under regular supervision and adheres to safety protocols.
  • Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Essential Duties and Tasks:
      • Operates mowers and equipment for grass cutting and trimming.
      • Uses chain saws, weedeaters, and other equipment for pruning and trimming.
      • Repairs and installs chain link fencing, builds baseball backstops, picnic tables, shelters, roofs, and playground equipment.
      • Checks equipment for proper operation and performs minor troubleshooting and maintenance.
      • Sets up and dismantles facilities for special events.
      • Prepares playing fields for games including mowing, painting, and moving bleachers.
    • Additional Job Duties:
      • Assists in training part-time staff.
      • Performs related duties as required.
  • Recruitment and Selection Guidelines:
    • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
      • General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
      • Familiarity with tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and building maintenance.
      • Some knowledge of safety precautions.
      • Ability to identify cleaning needs and follow instructions.
      • Proficiency in using hand tools and operating simple machinery.
      • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
    • Physical Requirements:
      • Ability to perform various physical tasks.
      • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
      • Visual acuity to operate mobile equipment safely and inspect work quality.
    • Desirable Education and Experience:
      • Graduation from high school.
      • Some experience in maintenance work related to a park setting.
      • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
