Recreation Maintenance Assistant

General Statement of Duties

This position performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work for Columbus County’s parks, playgrounds, playing fields, and recreational properties. Responsibilities include landscaping, facility upkeep, minor construction, and equipment operation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties

• Grounds Maintenance:
  • Operate mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters, and other light equipment for grass cutting, trimming, and tree/shrub maintenance.
  • Rake leaves, remove fallen limbs, and clear debris.
• Facility & Equipment Upkeep:
  • Install and repair chain link fencing, baseball backstops, picnic tables, shelters, and roofs.
  • Perform minor equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Ensure proper operation of playground equipment.
• Sports Field Preparation:
  • Prepare playing fields by mowing, painting regulation lines, and moving bleachers.
  • Set up and dismantle facilities for special events and county-sponsored functions.

Additional Responsibilities

• Assist in training part-time staff.
• Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
• Understanding of tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and facility maintenance.
• Basic knowledge of safety precautions related to job duties.
• Ability to identify cleaning and maintenance needs and resolve them with appropriate supplies and methods.
• Ability to operate hand tools and simple machinery safely.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and perform repetitive motions.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
• Must have visual acuity to safely operate mowers, chainsaws, and other equipment and inspect work quality.

Education & Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in maintenance work related to parks or recreation is preferred.
• Equivalent education and experience will be considered.

Special Requirements

• Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
