Recreation Maintenance Assistant

General Statement of Duties
This position performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work for Columbus County’s parks, playgrounds, playing fields, and recreational properties. Responsibilities include landscaping, facility upkeep, minor construction, and equipment operation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties
- Grounds Maintenance:
- Operate mowers, chainsaws, weedeaters, and other light equipment for grass cutting, trimming, and tree/shrub maintenance.
- Rake leaves, remove fallen limbs, and clear debris.
- Facility & Equipment Upkeep:
- Install and repair chain link fencing, baseball backstops, picnic tables, shelters, and roofs.
- Perform minor equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Ensure proper operation of playground equipment.
- Sports Field Preparation:
- Prepare playing fields by mowing, painting regulation lines, and moving bleachers.
- Set up and dismantle facilities for special events and county-sponsored functions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in training part-time staff.
- Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Understanding of tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and facility maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of safety precautions related to job duties.
- Ability to identify cleaning and maintenance needs and resolve them with appropriate supplies and methods.
- Ability to operate hand tools and simple machinery safely.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
- Must have visual acuity to safely operate mowers, chainsaws, and other equipment and inspect work quality.
Education & Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in maintenance work related to parks or recreation is preferred.
- Equivalent education and experience will be considered.
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
