General Statement of Duties
Operates and maintains a solid waste recycling center, assisting the public with unloading and sorting solid waste and recyclable materials while ensuring compliance with disposal policies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties
- Site Operations & Public Assistance:
- Open and close the Recycling Center according to the operating schedule.
- Verify proof of residency for site users.
- Inspect and direct waste disposal, ensuring materials are placed in correct containers and do not exceed disposal limits.
- Monitor recycling containers to prevent overloading and coordinate pickups as needed.
- Assist elderly and disabled citizens with site use.
- Answer phone calls and provide information to the public.
- Enforcement & Compliance:
- Observe all loads and ensure they are disposed of correctly.
- Educate and enforce recycling policies and procedures.
- Record Keeping & Reporting:
- Complete and submit records of site activity and visitor counts to the Supervisor.
- Report site issues, maintenance needs, or concerns immediately.
- Facility & Grounds Maintenance:
- Keep the recycling center office and grounds clean.
- Sweep, pick up litter, and ensure materials are properly placed in containers at the end of the day.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Required:
- Ability to interpret and apply waste disposal policies.
- Strong communication skills to interact with the public effectively.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Capable of maintaining simple work records.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Preferred (but not required):
- Knowledge of solid waste and recycling collection procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs constantly.
- Must have visual acuity to ensure accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work and records.
Education & Experience
- Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance and public interaction.
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
