RECREATION MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
General Statement of Duties
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds, playing fields, parks, playgrounds, and related County recreational properties.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks involving manual labor requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment operation. Work may also require the employee to work independently or as a member of a crew. Work involves operating push and tractor movers to cut grass and other similar tasks in varying weather conditions. Work also includes general housekeeping and building cleaning work. Employees are responsible for performing semi-skill construction work in the installation of concrete pads, roofs, chain fencing, and dugouts. Employees also are involved in routine horticultural tasks, minor facility and equipment repair, and preparing playing fields for a variety of sports. Some work assignments are seasonal and repetitive in nature and can usually be performed with little supervision. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self. Employees are subject to hazards in parks maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils. The employee may be subject to OSHA’s final standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that assignments are carried out correctly.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Operates a variety of mowers and equipment in grass cutting and trimming on recreational areas and other County owned property.
Operates chain saws, weedeaters and other light equipment to cut, prune and trim shrubbery and trees; rakes leaves, and removes fallen limbs and trash.
Repairs and installs chain link fencing; builds baseball backstops; builds picnic tables; constructs shelters and roofs; and installs and repairs playground equipment.
Checks equipment and ensures proper operation and may perform minor troubleshooting and maintenance.
Sets up and dismantles various facilities for special events and County sponsored functions.
Prepares playing fields for games to include mowing, painting, regulation lines, moving bleachers.
Additional Job Duties
Assists in training of part-time staff
Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds and building maintenance.
Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies.
Ability to read and write and understand and follow instructions.
Ability to use hand tools.
Ability to operate simple machinery and equipment.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as the mowers and chain saws in a safe manner and to inspect work quality.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and some experience in maintenance work related to a park setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
