GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures, as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law. Practical knowledge of microbiology, biology, food science, epidemiology, soil science, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices. Working knowledge of the design of on-site wastewater treatment systems, food borne diseases, communicable diseases, vector control, protection of water supplies, and institutional sanitation. Working knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health. Responsible for investigation of complaints and follow-up work. Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities. Must have ability to keep accurate records, draft written reports, and provide consultation to general public regarding public health issues.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences and 2 years of experience in environmental health; or a 4-year or Master Degree in environmental health from a program which is accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one year of experience in environmental health. Official college transcript required.
Necessary Special Qualifications/Requirements: Approval for registration as a Sanitarian or registration as a
Sanitarian by the North Carolina Board of Sanitarian Examiners prior to employment. Valid NC driver’s license with driving record evaluation for suitability for driving county owned vehicles. Successful completion of Centralized Intern Training, both virtual and in person training. Must pass the NEHA exam within 3 years of employment. Maintain REHS license by obtaining 15 hours of CEU credits yearly.
